KwaFelekisi, a village on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, is in turmoil after the killing of two people, including the nephew of a local chief, on Saturday afternoon.

S'celo Maphumulo and Mthokozisi Mseleku were gunned down in cold blood and their friend Khehla Khomo was hospitalised after the attack.

The three were returning from a traditional gathering, held near Maphumulo's house.

A local induna, Mfanukhona Xulu, was taken in by police for questioning after Saturday's attack.

Locals say the attacks were linked to an ongoing feud between a faction loyal to Xulu and a faction loyal to another induna, David Mbeko. The conflict in the area has claimed 16 lives since 2005.

Police spokesman Superintendent Daniella Veldhuizen described the situation as tense.

She said a police patrol had come under fire on Sunday.
