The Hello singer admitted he has no idea whether reports that Nicole is pregnant and engaged to marry her boyfriend, Good Charlotte frontman, Joel Madden, are true.
And Ritchie is grateful he didn't have to endure the media scrutiny Nicole is under during his 1970s heyday in The Commodores.
He told FoxNews.com: "She's just in an unfortunate situation. There's just so much information out there right now - MySpace, cellphones, the Internet.
"If we had all that when The Commodores were around, God only knows what my mother and father would have seen."
But Ritchie believes Nicole, who entered rehab in 2003 after being arrested for possession of heroin and is due in court this month to contest a charge of driving under the influence, is a normal 25-year-old.
He said: "She keeps apologising to me. I told her 'You're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing to your father at this age'." - Wenn
