People throughout the world are increasingly paying attention to the problem of environmental degradation and the need to save the world.

All of humanity is being called upon to do its bit to reverse the all-too-obvious damage before it is too late.

Those who have taken the message to heart are doing all they can to save the earth by, among other things, preserving energy and planting trees as global warming takes its toll.

Strangely, though, the need to save the earth continues to be dismissed as an esoteric Western indulgence, far removed from the daily realities of Africans and other parts of the developing world.

This, in spite of the fact that poor nations have not been spared the devastating effects of global warming.

The truth is that Africans, who pollute the least, are among the hardest hit by climate change.

Perhaps nothing sends this message home better than UN general secretary Ban Ki-Moon's observation that fierce competition over limited pastoral resources, because of climate change, lay at the heart of the bloody crisis in Darfur.

It was, therefore, pleasing to see South Africans join millions around the world in the Live Earth Concert at the weekend to spread the message about the need to save the earth - our earth - before it is too late.
