Silver Stars were clinging steadfastly to top spot on the Telkom Charity Cup voting chart in a bid to ensure that the host province is represented in this year's edition in Mmabatho on August 4.
Stars had amassed 42324 votes by 4pm yesterday.
"There is no doubt the success of the club last season is behind the incredible support we've been getting," said Thamaga Mokgopi, Stars' general manager.
"In addition, the fact that we are now a fully fledged club of North West has also contributed. The people have their own professional club to associate with for the first time.
"It also augurs well for the 2010 World Cup. Our people are proving that they are also passionate about sports and are also using the Charity Cup to help the needy.
"We will also be going to the schools after the winter holidays to mobilise more support. It will be sad for the hosts not to be part of this tournament.
"Our appreciation to the North West government for bringing the tournament to Mmabatho," said Mokgopi yesterday.
Kennedy Mosiapoa, the 2010 North West World Cup coordinator, said: "We are quite happy with the Charity Cup development, especially seeing our club doing well."
Back to the votes, Mamelodi Sundowns (27 872 votes) and Kaizer Chiefs (27305) were involved in a closely contested affair for the second and third spots.
Orlando Pirates are fourth on 21 139 votes, followed by Bloemfontein Celtic (12 140) and Moroka Swallows (1616).
The team with the least votes among the 16 listed was Lamontville Golden Arrows, with 91 votes.
