The launch of the Gauteng Correctional Services Region boxing tournament last week in Boksburg was a huge success.

It was hosted by the Boksburg Correctional Services and was watched by an estimated crowd of 700. Eight correctional services' teams took part in the inaugural tournament and were Baviaanspoort, Zonderwater, Pretoria, Krugersdorp, Modderbee, Leeukop, Johannesburg and hosts Boksburg.

It also attracted some of the distinguished guests including Sophie Ndaba of Generations, karateka Peter "Poison" Thage and Peter Malinga, the former WBU and IBO champion.

The hosts' communication officer Patrick Thobejane said: "The success of the tournament was beyond our expectations and we intend to make it a yearly event. The objective of the tournament was to get inmates involved in the rehabilitation programme.

There were 15 bouts including 12 adults and three juveniles categories. The winners and the runners-up received gold and silver medals. Baviaanspoort's juniors took the best performing team award while Boksburg grabbed the adult section.
