Why do eagles lay carpets?

After building large platform nests, many eagles line them with a thick layer of green leaves, which they replenish regularly. The reason for this is something of a mystery, though several theories exist. One theory holds that the aromatic leaves of some plants repel parasites, while another argues that the leafy layer insulates the nest from draughts.
