Felicia Nobantu Malele dedicated her life to raising her family as a mother and grandmother, and serving the community as a nurse and community worker.
Patients at various clinics in Soweto will remember her as their caring and understanding nursing sister.
MaMalele was born on April 8 1940 at Geduld Mine in Springs.
An energetic and caring woman, her philosophical steadfastness in the face of challenges, and her enthusiasm and love of life were legendary.
As a girl, she attended St Augustine's Mission School in Geduld, St Peters High School in Rosettenville and matriculated at Newell High in Port Elizabeth in 1960.
In 1970 she obtained a nursing diploma from St Henry Elliot in Mthatha. She later specialised in midwifery, ophthalmic and community nursing.
She obtained a BA degree through Unisa in 1990, majoring in nursing education and nursing administration.
MaMalele worked at St John's Eye Hospital as an ophthalmic nurse and also at various community health centres in Soweto as a midwife and community nurse.
On her retirement in 2000 she was a tutor at Lillian Ngoyi Health Centre.
She also became an active community worker and got involved in various community projects.
A scholar, researcher and innovative administrator, she wrote several academic papers in the nursing field and also conducted research into teenage pregnancy.
MaMalele died on June 27. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, two sisters and 11 grandchildren.
She will be buried tomorrow at West Park Cemetery. The service is at St James Anglican Church in Diepkloof Zone 3 from 7am.
