Fashion giant Hubert de Givenchy has launched an astonishing attack on his design successors.

The retired catwalk genius, who has clothed some of the world's most glamorous stars, including Audrey Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Jackie Kennedy, said he was disillusioned with design efforts.

"Fashion is over," the 80-year-old said.

"I was lucky enough to have worked when there were truly great couturiers. Dresses were meant to make women beautiful.

"Now there are bags and shoes that are more and more ugly. That's all. How many bags can people buy?
