The brutal murder of my colleague, councillor Ntai Mokoena, by thugs in Deneysville on Monday, must be condemned by all leaders across the political divide and civil society organisations.

Thirteen years into democracy, yet some people can just end the life of a promising leader of our movement.

Our constitution has provided platforms for communities to raise their concerns through ward councillors and engagement with the office of the mayor. Mokoena was vocal on many critical issues as the chief whip of the ruling party.

People should be encouraged to use the appropriate platforms to engage their leaders without resorting to violence. We know that lack of communication in any space can lead to deaths as happened in other parts of the continent.

Those responsible for Mokoena's death are cowards who don't want to use proper channels to air their views and complaints. Mokoena defended the decisions of the party, which he represented with pride and honour.

Mokoena's death can be attributed to anarchists within the municipality who want to sabotage the improved service delivery programme, of which he was a part.

The police should act quickly to ensure that those responsible for this senseless murder are brought to book.
