The recent public service strike has compelled the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine to postpone the closing date for undergraduate applications for 2008 by a month.
The institution yesterday said its initial deadline of June 30 would now be extended to August 3.
The university was the first to respond to a call from national Education Minister Naledi Pandor for tertiary institutions to extend their admission dates for student intakes for next year as a result of the 29-day public service strike.
The university's health sciences spokesman, Mary Ann Francis, said the application procedure to the school of medicine for an MB ChB Degree required grade 12 students to submit grade 11 final year results as well as June exam results.
"As a result of the public service strike, most high schools have not written the June exams," she said.
"Hence there is the possibility that students would feel compelled not to apply to study for the MB ChB Degree."
In an attempt not to prejudice 2008 applicants, the university has postponed the closing date for applications.
"This will only apply to current grade 12s wanting to apply for admission in 2008," said Francis.
It's not clear whether other institutions will follow suit.
