The main objectives of the act are to:

l Make provision for structures, services and means for promoting and monitoring the sound physical, psychological, intellectual, emotional and social development of children.

l Make provision for structures, services and means for promoting and monitoring the sound physical, psychological, intellectual, emotional and social development of children.

l Strengthen and develop community structures that can assist in providing care and protection for children.

l Protect children from discrimination, exploitation and any other physical, emotional or moral harm or hazards.

l Provide care and protection for children who are in need of care and protection.

l Recognise the special needs that children with disabilities may have.

l Promote the protection, development and wellbeing of children.

l Promote the preservation and strengthening of families.

l Give effect to certain constitutional rights of children.

l Give effect to the country's obligations concerning the wellbeing of children in terms of international instruments binding on South Africa.
