Black communal farmers in KwaZulu-Natal have been urged to eye the forthcoming 2010 Soccer World Cup as their chance "to make profits".
This emerged during a meeting between farmers and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for agriculture and environmental affairs, Mtholephi Mthimkhulu, at KwaMbonambi in northern Zululand on Tuesday.
Mthimkhulu told hundreds of communal farmers who gathered at the Esibusisweni Rural Development Centre that 2010 "is not only about football".
"Those of you involved in poultry farming would have to produce eggs and bacon for bed and breakfast establishments and hotels.
"Beans will also be in demand," Mthimkhulu said.
He said those who farm livestock must do so with one thing in mind - to export.
He said the fact that many whites like fresh goat milk and goat meat meant that farmers would have to double their efforts in producing these.
Mthimkhulu said his department would assist farmers on veld management and development of agricultural cooperatives.
Local farmer Canso Ngqulunga said the meeting with Mthimkhulu provided them with an opportunity to know what was expected of them for 2010 and beyond.
He has three hectares of banana and sweet potato plantations.
Ngqulunga is currently negotiating with a fruit and vegetable market in Durban to supply fresh produce.
