Copper cables worth about R500000 were seized in the Free State after police stopped a bakkie between Bethlehem and Fouriesburg.

Police spokesman Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said two police officials saw and chased a white Ford Bantam bakkie and another vehicle at about 2am yesterday.

The driver of the bakkie abandoned the vehicle. Mophiring said the suspect fled on foot and was later picked up by another vehicle.

When police inspected the bakkie they found 10 rolls of copper cable valued at R500000.

Mophiring said the bakkie had not been reported stolen. - Sapa
