The government claimed last night it did not know the whereabouts of Khwezi, the woman who last year laid a rape charge against ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma.

This despite the fact that she was supposed to be protected by police - and found refuge abroad - after Zuma was acquitted.

A daily newspaper yesterday reported that the woman had been granted asylum in the Netherlands.

Throughout the rape trial, Khwezi was under heavy police protection.

It emerged in court that after the alleged rape, the first person Khwezi phoned was Minister of Intelligence Ronnie Kasrils.

"We know nothing about her," said Mxolisi Dlamini, head of Kasrils's ministerial services.

The Department of Justice also said it knew nothing about her. - Kingdom Mabuza
