When young mothers resort to desperate measures such as dumping newborn babies, it perhaps signifies they feel helpless to change their dire situation.

When young mothers resort to desperate measures such as dumping newborn babies, it perhaps signifies they feel helpless to change their dire situation.

Yesterday, this newspaper reported that thousands of children a year are abandoned, with the number reaching at least 1200 in three provinces in the past 12 months.

Welfare officials cite HIV-Aids and poverty as among the factors driving mothers to dump their newborn babies.

Interestingly HIV-Aids and poverty consistently emerge as the major factors responsible for this phenomenon. This arguably suggests there is inadequate or a total lack of support for young mothers either from their immediate families or the state.

Though it could by argued that child grants provide relief for the dire situations that unemployed, pregnant women often find themselves in. Still, a social worker in the report cites ignorance among desperate parents about services available to them.

This calls for the Department of Social Development to generate campaigns to raise awareness of relevant government welfare services.
