Kgothatso Montjane, the South African number one seed in the Wheelchair Tennis Association, is determined to become one of the top international players.
The player from Seshego said she had joined the sport by accident.
She said early in 2005 one of her teachers asked her to attend a wheelchair tennis training course in Pretoria.
"I was not keen because I was not interested in sports, but as the training progressed, I started to fall in love with the game," said Montjane.
"I started to train hard and played the game with other players in the township."
She started to be actively involved in the sport, winning the 2005 Acsa Open.
She followed that up by winning the Free State, Limpopo and South African opens last year.
Montjane defended her Free State Open title this year and was a runner-up in the B Section of the Amsterdam Open in Holland.
Montjane and teammate Sydney Mathonzi were also invited to a training camp in Holland by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
"We were trained by international coaches in Amsterdam, and we learnt a lot in the game," she said.
Montjane is also training hard in preparation for the Belgium 2008 Paralympics.
"I would like to improve my world rankings by taking part in the Limpopo Open in September," said Montjane.
She is ranked 40th in the world.
She has been unbeaten at home since 2005 and has established herself among the top wheelchair tennis players in South Africa.
Montjane is studying towards a BSc degree in recreation and leisure at the University of Venda.
