Bakkies again made up half of last month's top 10 vehicle best-seller list. During the month, Volkswagen's CitiGolf took third place from the Opel Corsa Utility bakkie while the Opel Corsa car took 10th position from the VW Golf A5-Jetta A5.
Car sales last month plummeted 19percent from the same month last year. Part of this drop can be blamed on the National Credit Act, which makes it harder for people to borrow money. Car sales also suffered because of higher interest rates, soaring petrol costs, and increased car prices.
VW held the overall lead with its Polo Classic remaining South Africa's top selling car. Toyota's Hilux bakkie remained the domestic market's second best seller and the local motor industry's number one export at 4431 units last month.
Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni's criticism that South Africans were treating low interest rates irresponsibly by buying Hummers was shown to be unfounded by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa's data.
According to the association, not a single Hummer H3 was sold in South Africa last month. But it was the local vehicle manufacturing industry's seventh biggest export at 436 units.
The BMW 3-Series is the second most exported car with 4000 units, though its 998 domestic sales placed it 13th.
Car manufacturers seem to be concentrating on one model for export to win import credits under government's Motor Industry Development Programme.
