The first time I got behind the wheel of the new Peugeot 207 GTI was at a 400m drag race at the Wesbank Raceway.
Sadly, I lost the race, but I can't blame it on the car.
Tailored for its market, the 207 GTI is the latest little baby to be added to the 207 range, or "daisy" as it is described by Peugeot.
Hoping to set the GTI apart from other models in the range, the creatives were given freedom of design. The result is a sexy and ultra-sporty car that lives up to its pay-off-line: "GTI just became fun."
But the car's appeal is not only aesthetic. The 1,6litre direct injection, turbo-charged petrol engine also has something special to offer. This EP6DTS engine was developed by Peugeot with the help of BMW and produces 128kW at 6000rpm.
The engine delivers 240Nm of torque and is capable of increasing the torque to 260Nm at 1600rpm by using the OverBoost function.
Described by Peugeot as having the heart of an athlete, the EP6DTS engine can help the car reach a maximum speed of 220kmh.
The 207 GTI can go from zero to 100kmh in a remarkable 7,1 seconds.
The car does not lack in the safety department. It comes fully kitted with all the usual safety features one would expect from Peugeot. Steering stability programme (SSP) is one of those unexpected features that is unique to the 207 GTI.
The system helps the driver in conditions where the grip differs between the right and left side of the car.
Black suede fabric with a white thread detail covers the interior door panels. The back seat can comfortably carry two passengers and has a padded centre separation, which can be used as an armrest.
The 207 GTI has much to offer and will definitely sit well with die-hard Peugeot fans.
The GTI will retail at R199000 and comes with a three-year 100000km service plan.
The sport 1 option will retail at R220000 and the sport 2 at R250000.
