The police cannot explain why robbery charges against Orlando Pirates defender Lucky Lekgwathi, who was arrested last Friday, were withdrawn before the case went to court.

Lekgwathi was arrested in Riverlea, Johannesburg. It is alleged he and Thapelo Mojela robbed a 22- year-old man of his wallet, R140 and a cellphone.

Police spokesman Superintendent Chris Wilken said he was not given any reason by the prosecutor at Booysens on why Lekgwathi was set free.

Lekgwathi, 31, was released after the robbery charges were withdrawn, though he and Mojela had applied for bail soon after the arrest on Saturday, said Wilken.

Orlando Pirates lawyer Grant Herholdt told Sowetan: "The prosecutor reviewed the matter and realised there was not enough information to prosecute."
