Health institutions returned to normal yesterday, the Mpumalanga department of health and social services said.
Officials claimed that all workers reported for work as expected after the month-long public servants' strike.
Department spokesman Mpho Gabashane said yesterday that core workers involved in the strike were the support staff responsible for, among other things, cleaning, catering and laundry.
"Our hospitals have returned to normal; more importantly our support staff, who were the main people who stayed away during the strike, are back at work.
"The report we get is that service delivery is continuing in all our institutions," Gabashane said.
A few setbacks occurred at some Mpumalanga health institutions during the strike.
A heavily pregnant young woman from Songeni village near Thulamahashe and her family claimed that nurses turned them away from Tintswalo Hospital in Acornhoek in the middle of the night. The family said nurses, who were not in uniform, said they would not be helped because the nurses were on strike.
The family travelled about 50km to Mapulaneng Hospital where the woman gave birth at 4am.
A group of about 30 pregnant women who had gone to the Tekwane Clinic for their monthly checkups were turned away because nurses were on strike.
