Bail for farmers on charges of assault

Four farmers who face charges of attempted murder for allegedly assaulting two illegal Zimbabweans were released on bail by the Thabazimbi magistrates' court yesterday.

Four farmers who face charges of attempted murder for allegedly assaulting two illegal Zimbabweans were released on bail by the Thabazimbi magistrates' court yesterday.

Police spokesman Superintendent Ronel Otto said Kobus Janse van Vuuren, 41, Jaco Janse van Vuuren, 19, Barend Troskie, 21, and Liandre Botes, 20, were each granted bail of R1000.

The charges follow an incident on Saturday when the four men allegedly assaulted two Zimbabwean men, accusing them of stealing clothes from the farm.

The hearing was postponed to July 17 for further investigations.

The alleged assault took place on a farm at Nooitgedacht in Thabazimbi.

One of the victims was allegedly assaulted with a rubber hammer and the other was tied up with a chain and suspended from a chain block.

One victim fled to a nearby farm, where he reported the incident.

The second victim was later found by the police hiding on another farm.

On Sunday police followed up information and arrested the four.

The clothes and a cellular phone of one of the assault victims were found at the scene of the alleged assault.

The accused are all from Krugersdorp. The farm belongs to Kobus Janse van Vuuren.
