When Kalumbu Kapisa was growing up he used to watch movies shown with projectors that film distribution companies brought to his village.

He was so fascinated by how he could travel in his mind to far away places that he decided the film industry was where he wanted to be when he grew up.

Kapisa is the executive producer and director at Kwacha Media, a film and television production company that he jointly owns and manages with Lesego Kodisang.

He was born in 1980 in Blantyre, Malawi. The family relocated to South Africa in 1994 when Kapisa was 14.

"It was a drastic change for me, but the move here helped to broaden my mind and I started to see the world in a different way," he says.

After matriculating from Athlone Boys in 1999 he enrolled for a motion picture qualification at Allenby Campus - a course that is accredited by Pretoria Technikon.

He then ventured into the film and television industry, where he had different jobs that ranged from being a production assistant on set to working as an insert producer and director of television music shows.

Kapisa also did freelance work, where he met and worked with renowned filmmakers including the late Dumisani Dlamini, who inspired him to branch out on his own.

Late in 2003 Kwacha Media was born, which is where Kapisa would fulfil his dream of bringing his childhood memories to life, putting them on screen and sharing them with the public.

Kapisa is currently working on a new movie with the working title of Adrenaline Rush.
