Athletes who run a sub-64 minutes at the Nedbank South African Half-Marathon in Durban on Sunday will automatically qualify for the world championships over the same distance in Udine, Italy, on October 14.

Sunday's race will see top South African runners such as Hendrick Ramaala, Shadrack Hoff, Rene Kalmer, Sarah Mahlangu, Motsamai Motone, Norman Dlomo and Charne Bosman (nee Rademeyer) vying for honours in the men's and women's sections.

The race starts at 7.30am from the local City Hall and finishes at the King's Park Athletics Stadium.

Phiwe Tsholetsane, Athletics South Africa (ASA's) events, marketing and communications manager, said yesterday that entries for the race would also be taken an hour before the event.

"The race caters not only for the elite runners, but also forms part of the popular and successful Nedbank Matha Series that consists of half-marathons, marathons and 10km races around the country," Tsholetsane said.

ASA president Leonard Chuene added: "We are looking forward to an exciting event on Sunday where the cream of South African road running will be on display on the day. I urge people of eThekwini to come in throngs and support the race."

Gloria Baeba is another runner who is a firm favourite to win the women's title on Sunday. The Athletics Gauteng North runner produced a spirited display when she finished second at this year's Nedbank Johannesburg City Marathon.

Limpopo Athletics (LA) president Attlee Maponyane said their athletes were determined to win medals in Durban in honour of their late teammate, John Molongoana. Molongoana, who died after a short illness, was buried in Seshego last Sunday.

LA will be represented by Ludwick Mamabolo, Zacharia Mohlabe and Gary Nyathi.
