Violent taxi industry a law unto itself

The taxi industry seems to exist in its own space, playing by its own rules and immune to the laws of the land. Taxi violence hits the headlines almost daily.

The taxi industry seems to exist in its own space, playing by its own rules and immune to the laws of the land. Taxi violence hits the headlines almost daily.

I am deeply disturbed by the recent attacks on Putco buses driven by allegations that the buses provide a cheaper mode of transport. But even more disturbing is the manner in which the police handled the whole incident.

If allegations that the police failed to take action because they had probed many such incidents against taxi drivers are true, then those commuters were let down.

With the Gautrain well on its way and other forms of transport being improved and promising to be a more convenient mode of transportation, one can only imagine the impact it would have should it not go down well with some of the taxi associations.
