Two leading members of the striking South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) appeared in the Vereeniging magistrates' court on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting and robbing a school principal.
Sam Nengwekulu, 41, and Moses Senye, 46, are accused of having assaulted Clare Lucas at her school in Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, earlier this month.
Nengwekulu is Sadtu's Ennerdale branch chairman and Senye is the union's Gauteng central region chairman.
It is alleged that earlier this month the two were among a group of demonstrators armed with sjamboks and sticks who entered St George's Primary School where Lucas, a cleaner and two pupils were assaulted.
The demonstrators allegedly accused Lucas of not allowing Sadtu members who were teaching at the school to join the national public service strike.
The accused were not asked to plead and the case was postponed to July 27. - Ntwaagae Seleka
