About 100 nurses picketing the South African Nursing Council in Arcadia, Pretoria, yesterday were assured that striking nurses will not be fired.

Moeketsi Mohai, general secretary of the South African Democratic Nurses Union, an affiliate of Cosatu, said they were engaged in the action because they had learnt of the nursing council's intention to discipline nurses.

"We have reached an agreement that the dismissals would be reversed and that all nurses who took part in the strike would only be served with final written warnings when they returned to work," he said.

"We regard this as a breakthrough because we have managed to save the nurses' jobs.

"So we are happy that we have met our objectives," Mohai said.
