About 60percent of South Africa's population live in urban areas, according to the 2007 State of the World Population report.

About 60percent of South Africa's population live in urban areas, according to the 2007 State of the World Population report.

The report was released by the United Nations Population Fund in Pretoria yesterday.

The chief operating officer of the Department of Social Development, Zane Dangor, said the increased migration to cities attested to the poverty in rural areas.

"The poor will move to cities for opportunities," he said.
