Senegalese musician Omar Pene is set to enthrall music fans in South Africa starting tomorrow at Kippies Jazz International.
The performance marks the launch of a new concept called African Synergy in South Africa at Kippies, Newtown, and heralds the birth of an innovative and ambitious pan-African cultural initiative.
African Synergy is a pan-African cultural network of artists, festivals, venues and promoters in partnership with Zimbabwe's famous Book Café.
"It is focused at breaking the insidious legacy of cultural isolation within Africa. Contemporary African societies are, from a historical and cultural perspective, fragmented from each other. Our literary products barely cross borders. African performing artists in music, dance and theatre are mostly unknown within Africa," the organisers say.
African Synergy's Johannesburg launch, which kicks off at 7.30pm, will be celebrated with the performance by Pene and his Le Super Diamono band, supported by South African artist Nathi Gcabashe.
Pene will also perform on July 29 at the Durban International Film Festival.
On July 5 thepolitical narrative "Through the Darkness: A Life in Zimbabwe" by Judith Todd will be staged at Atlas Studios in Milpark, Johannesburg.
