The South African Football Players Union (Safpu) yesterday pledged their unconditional support to the PSL on the contentious broadcast rights issue.

Sipho Ndzudzo, Safpu general secretary, said it was untrue that they were against SuperSport International being given the broadcast rights.

Ndzudzo confessed to being at the wrong place at the wrong time last Thursday when SABC used several prominent people on television to support them in the PSL rights deal.

"What happened is that I received a message on my phone last week to attend a Creative Workers Union meeting on the television rights," said Ndzudzo.

"In terms of the message left, the meeting was scheduled for Braamfontein.

"However, on my arrival there I was informed that it had been moved to SABC offices.

"I did not know exactly what the meeting was all about. When I got there, it became clear to me that the SABC were campaigning for support on the television rights.

"We still have to speak to the PSL to check what is there for the players around the issue. For us the most important thing is looking after the interests of the players.

"The union will support the PSL despite who gets the rights between the SABC and SuperSport as long as the interests of the players are taken into consideration."

SuperSport boss Imtiaz Patel will unpack the television rights deal at a media briefing in Randburg this morning.
