Three Ekurhuleni full-contact karate camps competed for the first time as a unit at the junior tournament at the Katlehong Community Hall at the weekend.
This follows the revival of the unified Karate South Africa three weeks ago in Johannesburg after two structures had ironed out their differences in a meeting.
All structures were urged to work together towards the deve-lopment of the martial arts.
The unity talks were initiated by Moss Mashishi, president of the South African Sports Confede-ration and Olympic Committee, where KSA's interim committee was established.
Event coordinator Hloni Motloung said the tournament was part of the Kathorus Winter Games.
Shihan Collen Sedoaba, chairman of the Ekurhuleni Full-Contact Karate Association, said he was delighted to see different styles working together towards the improvement of the sport.
His sentiments were echoed by KSA additional member Sensei Sydney Zilimbola, who said this initiative served the betterment of karate in South Africa.
Camps that attended the tournament included Royama, Matsushima and Matsui.
Brinklow's International Taekwon-do were part of the tournament and its spokesman, Natasha Els, praised the organisers for extending an invitation to them.
Though Els's karateka were not used to full-contact styles, Nancy Swart beat Goodness Mokgeseng in the girls Under-40kg final and got a trophy and gold medal.
Winners: Girls - Boitumelo Metsing (U-30kg), Nonkululeko Gazibe (U-35kg), Natasha Swarts (U-40kg), Tswaki Mosebi (U-55kg), Mbali Msomi (open).
Boys - Lebo Lesiba (U-25kg), Sibusiso Ntenga (U-30kg), Sello Mpowane (U-35kg), Mpat Mofokeng (U-40kg), Bheki Tshabalala (U-45kg), Sello Renko (U-50kg), Msala Hlopho (U-60kg), Elvis Tsotetsi (open).
