A Limpopo woman who was admitted to hospital with severe burn wounds last month after a fire has died.

Mosibudi Maenetja, 53, from Mokgoloboto village near Tzaneen was admitted to Letaba Hospital in Nkowankowa after a fire gutted her home and killed five of her children.

She was later transferred to Mankweng Hospital near Polokwane.

The children, who were trapped in the hut with her, were burnt to death.

She is survived by four other children who are now left to fend for themselves because she was the family's sole provider.

Mopani police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said Maenetja and her family were asleep when the fire started.

"When they woke up, the hut was already engulfed in fire, trapping them inside.

"Maenetja tried to escape, but she was severely burnt and was screaming for help.

"When villagers, who had heard her screams arrived on the scene, her five children had already died," said Ngoepe.

Maenetja's daughter Eunice, 17, said her mother would be buried at the village cemetery alongside her five children.
