Team Excel rider Prince Maluleke, who is the defending champion of the Selati Africycle Tour, says he is ready to defend his title.

The seven-day race, which covers more than 700km of riding and 1700m of climbing, will take place in Mpumalanga from September 9 to 15.

It will start in Badplaas and take the cyclists through Malelane, Nelspruit, Lydenburg, Blyde River, Sabie and back to Nelspruit for the final stretch and time trials.

Maluleke, 20, said last year's event was a great experience because of the outstanding organisation and exceptional route.

"I was overjoyed with winning the Africycle tour as it was my first big race win and has been a major highlight in my career.

"I will be back this year to defend my title and team Excel has already started training extensively for the race," said Maluleke.

Last year's race had 150 cyclists taking part with a total prize money of R103 500.

Title sponsor Selati has increased its commitment this year to R150000 and with Toyota, Cape Storm and ER24, has promised to make this year's competition even more memorable.

Peter Harland of Selati said the tour's concept of "connect, compete and conserve", is exciting.
