Traffic came to a standstill on the N3 in Durban yesterday morning as pieces of metal were flung across the road after a high-speed pile-up.
Miraculously, no one was killed at the scene near the Pavilion shopping centre, but 23 injured people were rushed to various hospitals in and around the Durban area.
One motorist is fighting for his life in hospital.
ER24 spokesman, Neil Noble said paramedics raced to the scene of the accident shortly after 8am.
He said when paramedics arrived there was chaos on both sides of the busy highway, with vehicles and bodies strewn across the road.
"Witnesses said the chaos erupted after a vehicle stopped suddenly in the middle lane.
"As motorists stopped behind him, vehicles slammed into each other.
"This resulted in a multiple-car pile-up on the Pinetown- bound carriageway which caused a red VW Cabriolet to catapult across the centre median," he said.
"It then slammed into a silver RAV4 and a minibus taxi which were travelling on the Durban- bound carriageway," Noble said.
He said bodies were flung from vehicles as they rolled and one person, aged 30, was trapped inside the overturned minibus and is in a serious condition.
ER24 paramedics stabilised the critically injured patients and airlifted one of the drivers to St Augustine's Hospital where he is in a critical condition.
