Two cash guards were injured in an attempted cash-in- transit heist on the N11 between Ladysmith and Newcastle yesterday morning, said paramedics.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the guards were injured when their van was involved in an accident after it was forced off the road near the Dannhauser off-ramp.

He said one guard was in a critical condition and the other suffered serious injuries. They were taken to Newcastle Private Hospital.

It is not known if any shots were fired during the incident. The N11 had to be closed. Botha could not give further details.

Tugela police spokesman Captain Charmaine Struwig could not immediately confirm the incident.
