Relations between journalists and politicians are fraught with tension.

Not least among the causes of the love-hate relationship is the fact that politicians regard their role as more legitimate because they are elected whereas the media, who make it their business to keep them in check, are not.

Still, civilised societies such as ours have long accepted the indispensable role of the Fourth Estate as an essential pillar of democracy.

It is against this background that editors and the government, led by President Mbeki, had a pow-wow in Pretoria on Sunday.

We applaud such moves aimed at promoting appreciation of the role either party plays in serving the public good.
