They say the eyes are windows to the soul. Keedo, a Proudly South African children's clothing company, experienced this first hand on a recent visit to Sakhumzi, Cape Town.
During the visit, they looked into the eyes of 95 destitute children. Sakhumzi is a haven for homeless children in Mfuleni, near Cape Town.
When mama Amelia Poswa took in a destitute child almost 40 years ago, she never realised that this would grow into Sakhumzi, which means "to build a house".
Mama Amelia not only built a house, but a home for destitute children in her community.
Today, Sakhumzi offers a loving home, education and a bright future to 95 children up to the age of 21. Sakhumzi also offers a daily creche facility for an additional 150 children from the local community.
Keedo realised mama Amelia is one of a kind, with a heart as big as Africa. That is why it decided to focus its social responsibility efforts on Sakhumzi.
To start the ball rolling, Keedo launched the "Keedo Cares" T-shirt in all Keedo stores nationwide. For every Keedo giraffe T-shirt sold, the organisation donates R10 to Sakhumzi to help in achieving Mama Amelia's dream of creating a better future for the children.
"What makes me happy," says mama Amelia, "is to see a safe, happy child. My calling is to look after children because they are the future. "When I started, I never knew it would go on for so long. I started with just a few and in no time the number increased.
"I am proud to be mom to all of them and in the end no child leaves Sakhumzi until they can fend for themselves," she says.
