Today is fear enough

As the world commemorates World Refugee Day today, millions of people displaced by flashpoints of war and natural disaster ponder the future elsewhere.

As the world commemorates World Refugee Day today, millions of people displaced by flashpoints of war and natural disaster ponder the future elsewhere.

And yet, depending on the circumstances that prompted their displacement, it might not be the future that is of immediate concern to the displaced millions, but a present characterised by fear, despair and confusion.

Wherever they are, they most likely feel condemned by circumstances beyond their control to be the wretched of the earth.

It is likely they feel trapped in the most inhumane conditions imaginable.

Without humanitarian aid from benevolent non-governmental organisations and governments, millions of war refugees - many of them emaciated children and women - seem doomed.

Of immediate concern to global communities today is the millions of refugees in and outside Iraq and Darfur in western Sudan.

War-torn Iraq is in the throes of the fastest-growing refugee crisis in the world with nearly 2million outside the country and 1,7million internally displaced people.

In Darfur, as many as 2,5million were thought to have been displaced as of October last year.

Sadly, the phenomenon of refugees will remain with us for posterity as man's relentless propensity for mindless wars continues to dog humanity.
