The DA has lodged papers in the Durban high court, asking the court to intervene in the street-renaming debacle.

John Steenhuisen, DA leader in the eThekwini municipality, said yesterday: "The procedures, national acts and guidelines governing the renaming of geographic names have not been followed.

"We are not opposed to renaming streets and buildings provided it reflects a balanced history of all who contributed to the development of Durban and its environs. The opposite is in fact true."

He said it could be done in a way to promote nation building.

"Or it can be done in a way that excludes citizens, causes division and fosters resentment.

"It is regrettable the ANC in eThekwini have chosen the latter course," he said.
