Fikile Majola, the general secretary of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union, said yesterday that the union condemned any violence during the strike.

He said he hoped the shooting of a nurse was not related to the strike.

Esther Mthombeni, 45, of Katlehong in Ekurhuleni, was shot by three men travelling in a car after coming off night shift at Natalspruit Hospital. She is fighting for her life at the hospital.

Jack Bloom, the DA's health spokesman in Gauteng, slammed the shooting.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.

"No arrests have been made yet and investigations are continuing," said Captain Elizabeth Moloi of the Katlehong police.
