Imagine getting an electricity bill from Eskom demanding R5000 for electricity you have not consumed.

Imagine getting an electricity bill from Eskom demanding R5000 for electricity you have not consumed.

This is what Florence Hleza, 60, of Zuurbekom is going through.

Her electricity cables were stolen in November, said Hleza.

She reported this to Eskom, which advised her to lay a theft charge and to pay her arrears, she said.

She paid the arrears of R2600 to have her electricity reconnected, but nothing happened.

"My neighbours have been good to me. They have allowed me to use their fridge to store my food," said Hleza.

She said she was shocked when she received a bill for R5199 in April.

"I don't have a meter box as it was stolen," she said.

Eskom acknowledged receiving Sowetan's inquiry on June 5, but have still not responded.
