This has led the Science and Technology Department and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants to address the issue.
The institute runs DST-Thuthuka maths and science development camps during school holidays.
Thuthuka, the institute's education upliftment initiative, joined the department to empower pupils with numerical skills to enter tertiary institutions.
The project, "Today's Learners, Tomorrow's Leaders", takes place in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo and Western Cape.
The week-long camps aim to enhance the skills of grade 11 and 12 pupils in maths, science and accountancy to grow their competencies and position science, engineering, technology and chartered accountancy as careers. In this way, pupils from rural areas are exposed to careers that they might never have considered.
The project also aims to fast-track skills development of pupils from previously disadvantaged backgrounds while equipping them with study skills and examination techniques. In addition, they are empowered with life skills and coping mechanisms.
The department has committed R25million to the project over its five-year tenure.
Last year the project empowered 1300 pupils with the required scientific and numeric skills.
This year it aims to reach more than 1600 pupils.
The remaining camps are:
l Western Cape, July 8 to 14 July for grades 11 and 12 at the Cape Academy of Maths, Science and Technology.
l KwaZulu-Natal, July 2 to 8 for grade 11 at Esayidi FET-Gamalakhe College, Zakheni, Port Shepstone.
l Gauteng, July 1 to 7 for grade 11 at Magaliesberg Youth for Christ.
l Limpopo, July 8 to 14.
l Eastern Cape, July 2 to 10 for grades 11 and 12 at PE Sumcay Camp site.
l North West, July 1 to 7 for grade 11 at Mafikeng Campus, North West University.
