An advertising school, Funda Centre, was launched in Orlando, Soweto, last week.

The school is the initiative of Vega, the School of Brand Communications and Cafe.

The Imagination Lab launched the first advertising school in Soweto and promises to change the lives of talented young students who love the advertising industry.

Imagination Lab's aim is to provide young, talented people from economically disadvantaged communities with skills for a career in advertising.

Speaking at the launch, Vega "school navigator", Gordon Cook said: "The model is a one-year programme for youngsters of all races from economically disadvantaged communities and sets them up for a future in the advertising, marketing and communications industries."

Cook also said that after the programme, students will be placed in companies or agencies on a tuition programme for another year, where they will receive continuous coaching and support.

The students' salaries are funded by Mappp-Seta, which also covers the course fee of R25900 each.

A representative of Mappp-Seta, Dikeledi Mosalo, said: "May all the students we are funding work hard and excel in what they do. Do not look at how much you get paid after you have completed your studies, but work towards learning and improving your skills."

An Imagination Lab graduate, Bessie Sibanyoni, said: "Imagination Lab has opened my eyes to opportunities I never even dreamed of."

Imagination Lab has two campuses in Durban and Johannesburg, three community campuses in KwaMashu, Alexandra and now in Soweto.
