A volatile standoff between police and enraged street vendors in Durban turned nasty yesterday morning when more than 500 people were arrested during a clash with police.

Vendors from the city centre marched to the Durban magistrates' court to demand the release of 24 people arrested on Monday for public violence and illegal trading.

Police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse rioting vendors.

Property in the area was damaged and rioters attacked other vendors on their way to court.

The clash was the second one this week.

Four policemen were injured in the incident.
