The involvement of the National Intelligence Agency in the widespread probe of copper cable theft is welcome.

The recent surge in copper theft has plunged many suburbs around the country into darkness.

We are relieved that the probe has been extended to scrap wholesalers who are encouraging thugs to commit the crime in return for lots of money.

Copper cable theft is economic sabotage that is costing this country billions of rands a year.

All efforts have to be made to stop this massive criminal activity and bring the culprits to book.Once convicted, they should be jailed for long terms to show the seriousness of the crime.

Members of the public must also play a major role and help the police in identifying those involved in this treachery.
