A gang of cash-in-transit robbers dropped and abandoned three money bags and fled after a security guard drove over one of them.

The incident happened at the Highlands News shopping complex in Witbank, Mpumalanga, yesterday morning.

The guards were collecting money from an Absa bank branch when they were attacked by five men.

Captain Eddie Hall of Witbank police said a Coin Security vehicle with two occupants parked outside the mall and one guard entered the complex shortly after 8:30am.

Hall said the guard came out of the mall with three money containers and was shot in the left leg by the suspects who grabbed the cash containers.

"The security guard in the security vehicle gave chase and knocked one of the gunmen down and ran over his leg, fracturing it," he said.

The other suspects fled on foot. Both the suspect and the injured guard were taken to the local hospital for treatment.
