The Freedom of Expression Institute says it is concerned about the Premier Soccer League's decision to award broadcasting rights for all its matches to Supersport for the next five years.
Na'eem Jeenah, the institute's director of operations, said at the weekend that soccer was a national sport loved mostly by thousands of people from poor communities.
"How then can the PSL justify awarding the contract to a channel that broadcasts on a platform that is subscribed to by only 9 percent of South Africans?"
Jeenah said communication technologies and the media needed to be used in more creative ways to expand accessibility.
"The PSL is reducing accessibility. This move effectively privatises soccer so that its access will be mainly to the elite in our country," Jeenah said.
