June 1976 commemorated
North West's Transvaal Basotho Lutheran Church in Bapong village held a special service to commemorate June 16.
The theme of the commemoration was Going Back to June 16 1976.
The service was well attended by congregants in resplendent outfits. The speakers told the audience never to forget the great sacrifice that the youth of 1976 made for South Africa.
Talking about the importance of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice, speakers relived the events of June 1976 that shaped the liberation struggle.
National youth president of the Basotho Lutheran Churches, Mokgadi Makhene, from Winterveldt, said young people have to understand the importance of that fateful day.
"It is because of the youth of 1976 that today we are liberated. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be where we are today.
"They gave their lives to pave the way for our freedom," Makhene said.
She told school children to take education seriously. She said they have the best education and they must make good use of it.
"They, the class of 1976, laid the foundation for us and it is our responsibility to make sure that we progress. We must know where we are going," Makhene said.
Lebogang Malapane prayed that God help doctors to find a cure for Aids because the youth, tomorrow's leaders, are the worst affected.
