A young person who attends church is "a beautiful, respectable young person".

This is the view of the Reverend Makhanya of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa in KwaZulu-Natal.

"Youths who live according to the standards of the church, and more importantly the standards of God, are the same youths who wouldn't be caught dead at the busiest nightclubs or under the influence of alcohol and drugs," Makhanya said.

He said a church was "a holy space where the ways of the higher being are imparted", and that young people should "drink from that well, where there is wisdom and all that is good for a solid future.

"So, the doors of the church are especially opened to the youth to make sense of all the things that seem otherwise."
