Several commemoration rallies will be held around the country tomorrow to honour the youth of June 16 1976.
It was these young people who stood up against the apartheid government and its policy of "Bantu education".
Many lives were lost when police opened fire on the protesting pupils who had organised marches throughout the country's black townships.
Hector Peterson was the first to die during these confrontations. The uproar happened after the government introduced Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools.
The venues for some of today's events:
l The Gauteng government, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng youth commission will host the Youth Day commemoration at Johannesburg Stadium tomorrow.
Gauteng Premier Mbazima Shilowa will deliver the keynote address.
l The ANC Youth League will hold a rally in Bloemfontein.
l The Socialist Party of Azania will gather at the gates of Avalon Cemetery in Soweto at 7am.
l A panel discussion themed "So Where To?" will take place at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus tomorrow from 9am.
The event is sponsored by the SABC, the University of Johannesburg and Sowetan.
Speakers will include SABC chief executive Dali Mpofu and Ihron Rensburg, the SABC's director of public and regulatory affairs.
The head of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, Sibongile Mkhabela, Pamodzi's Ndaba Ntsele, 1970s student activist Thandi Ndlovu and African Musicians Against HIV-Aids leader Doc Shebeleza will be among the speakers at the Soweto event.
