People used to watching their favourite teams play for free on public television are shocked at the news that they their past-time is in for a major change.

The loss by the SABC of the rights to televise live soccer to pay-channel Supersport, after nine seasons, is a bit of a mixed bag for soccer.

The deal, worth over R1billion, is a huge boon for the PSL and clubs.

As for fans, it raises the almost certain possibility that they will not be able to watch their beloved teams unless they go to the stadium, which is not always practical.

Just the idea of people not being able to watch Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax, Moroka Swallows and other teams play on television is hard to fathom.

It can also be argued it is about time fans proved just how soccer mad they are by actually filling stadiums, especially when we are due to host the 2010 World Cup.
